10 Things i learned joining a engineering college

Its been 4 years of studying engineering now and i am about graduate in a week's time(hopefully). Engineering has been very harsh in the beginning ( lot of backlogs in the first 2 sems) and it got kind towards the end(last semester scored more than 70% :D ). Studying engineering has taught me many things.

1. Not all guyz are intelligent and not all girls are beautiful.

2. Friday mornings are reserved for watching movies and monday is a holiday to take rest after a hectic weekend.

3. Studying 1 night before the exam is considered cool and doing the same 1 or 2 weeks before, you are considered a nerd.

4. Internals are conducted to test the class unity ( i have never seen such unity before in my life)

5. The bus rides to the college in the morning makes you feel like you have been attending college regularly and the evening ride makes you think you have studied too much. :P

6. Industrial trips are always meant to enjoy (if you have a girl then these trips are even more interesting) and there is more sight-seeing than learning about industries.

7. College canteen always serve bad food and you learn to appreciate it incourse of time.

8. You find other college chics interesting and wished you studied in that college.

9. The professors/lecturers never learn to speak english and you feel like giving spoken english lessons to them.

10. Rules are always meant to be broken, be it on the dress code or using mobile phones in the campus.

A.R Rahman - The Biography

I am a die-hard Rahman fan(Rahmaniac), my blog is incomplete without a post on this little legend. I am a moderator in www.uyirvani.com , maintained by Rahmaniacs like me and this biography has been taken from this very site.

Childhood

Allah Rakha Rahman was born A.S.Dileep Kumar on the 6th of January in the year 1966, in Madras, to a musically affluent family. His father K.A.Sekhar was an arranger and conductor in Malayalam movies and had worked under the likes of Salil Chowdhary and Devarajan. Dileep started learning the piano at the tender age of four.

Background

At the age of 9, his father passed away following a mysterious illness with rumours abounding that he was the victim of black magic by his rivals. The pressure of supporting his family fell on Dileep. At the age of 11, he joined Illaiyaraja's troupe as a keyboard player. It was his mother Kareema Begum who encouraged him to follow in his father's footsteps. But all this had an adverse affect on his education.Infrequent attendance and an unaccommodative management forced him to shift schools from the prestigious Padma Seshadri Bal Bhavan to the Madras Christian College and finally he dropped out of school altogether.

Religion

In 1988, one of his sisters fell seriously ill and numerous attempts to cure her failed. Her condition progressively worsened. The family had given up all hope when they came in contact with a Muslim Pir - Sheik Abdul Qadir Jeelani or Pir Qadri as he was popularly known. With his prayers and blessings, Dileep's sister made a miraculous recovery.Rattled by the bad experience and influenced by the teachings of the Pir, the entire family converted to Islam. Thus A.S.Dileep Kumar became Allah Rakha Rahman.

Musical Background

He also played on the orchestra of M.S.Vishwanathan and Ramesh Naidu and accompanied Zakir Hussain and Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan on world tours. All this experience enabled him to earn a scholarship to the famed Trinity College of Music at Oxford University from where he obtained a degree in Western Classical Music. After he returned he continued to be a part of various music troupes. He was also a part of local rock bands like Roots, Magic and Nemesis Avenue where he performed with his future colleagues like Ranjit Barot and Sivamani.

Career In Ads

Vizi Manuel, the lead keyboard player in Illaiyaraja's troupe, advised him to try other alternatives like advertising.Fortunately for Dileep he soon got his first break in advertising when he was asked to compose the jingle to promote Allwyn's new Trendy range of watches, in 1987.The ads were a success and Dileep's work in them was appreciated.Dileep moved full time into advertising as a few offers came his way. Thus began Dileep's 5-year saga in advertising where he went on to compose more than 300 jingles.Rahman did a lot of popular ads like those for Parry's, Leo Coffee, Boost featuring Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev, Titan, Premier Pressure Cooker, Hero Puch and Asian Paints. The jingles that he composed for the Leo Coffee ad starring Aravind Swamy and the Asian Paints ad directed by Rajeev Menon also won him awards and recognition. He also won an award for composing the theme music of the Madras Telugu Academy's Spirit of Unity Concerts.

Studio

In 1989, he started a small studio of his own, called Panchathan Record Inn, attached to his house. This would later develop into one of India's most well equipped and advanced recording studios. In his established state of the art sound and recording studio he began experimenting in sound engineering, design and production. He also began a collection of sound samples, creating one of the most comprehensive sonic libraries in Asia.

Non-Film Work

During his stint in advertising, he released his first album, of Muslim devotional songs, titled `Deen Isai Malai'.This was followed by `Set Me Free', an album of English songs which was the launch album of singer Malgudi Subha, by Magnasound, where Dileep set the songs to tune. Both the albums went unnoticed in the market.

Films

At an advertising awards function he chanced upon a young man receiving the award for the best ad jingle which he had composed for the popular Leo Coffee ad.At the party that followed the awards presentation ceremony Maniratnam was introduced to the young composer by his cousin Sharada Trilok of Trish Productions for whose company the young man had worked.Mani requested for a sample of his wares. The composer readily complied and invited the director over to his studio where he played out a tune that he had been pushed into composing by his school friend G.Bharat alias Bala who had been greatly disturbed by the Cauvery river tensions.Mani was hooked instantly. He signed on the composer to score the music for his next film which was to be produced by the veteran Tamil director K.Balachander.That film was Roja. That tune would become the song "Tamizha Tamizha". Rahman became a household name in Tamil Nadu overnight and the score of `Roja' was the first step in changing the face of Indian film music.`Roja' won every conceivable award in music that year. Rahman also got the Rajat Kamal for best music director at the National Film Awards , the first time ever by a debutante. He left ads and moved into film music full time.In the five years since Roja, he has created music for blockbuster Indian films including Roja, Pudhiya Mugam, Gentleman, Kizhaku Seemaiyilae, Duet, Kadalan, Bombay, May, Madham, Indian, Muthu kadhal Dasam, Love Birds and others. His 1995 soundtrack for Bombay crossed 5 million units and Rahman had arrived as the "King of Indian Pop" with sales of more than 40 million albums over a period of 3 years.

Playback Singing

In the movie "Bombay" Rahman formally took to playback singing.Rahman had lent his voice to his compositions earlier too but they had been part of the chorus or bit pieces like `Marhaba' in `Urvashi' in `Kadhalan' or background pieces and interludes like `Yelelo' in `Chinna Chinna Aasai' in `Roja'. But `Hamma Hamma' in `Bombay' was Rahman's first complete song.

Vande Mataram

In 1996, when Rahman had gone to Bombay to attend the Screen Awards ceremony, he met his childhood friend G.Bharat.During this meeting both had discussed a proposal for an album to commemorate 50 years of Indian Independence in 1997.In 1997, the International music giant, Sony Music, whose portfolio included the likes of Michael Jackson, entered the Indian market in a big way. They were looking to promote Indian artistes internationally. And the first person to be signed up by Sony Music from the Indian sub-continent was A.R.Rahman, on a 3-album contract.Rahman suggested the idea that he had discussed with Bharat to Sony Music India and was immediately accepted. Called `Vandemataram', it was a tribute to the motherland and featured songs to mark the 3 colours of the Indian Flag.`Vandemataram' was released simultaneously in 28 countries across the world under the prestigious Columbia Label of Sony Music on August 15th 1997.Rahman himself performed live at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi on the eve of the Golden Jubilee of Indian Independence to a packed audience that comprised of the Prime Minister of India. The album was a mega success and sold over 1.2 million copies in India and did reasonably well internationally too.

Artistes & inspirations

At the age of 32, Rahman has already worked with internationally reputed artistes like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Apache Indian, Zakir Hussain, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, Dominic Miller, L.Shankar, Kadri Gopalnath, Vikku Vinayakram, Ustad Sultan Khan and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt among many others.Rahman has in collaborations with artists such as L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain, David Byrne, Talvin Singh and Apache Indian - both recording and on tour.On a recent trip to India, David Byrne met Rahman and was so impressed that he went on to record some sessions with Rahman for a project he is currently completing (as yet unreleased).Rahman lists among his favourites Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Carpenters, Carnatic, Rock and fusion.

He credits all his inspiration and success to Allah.

Thats it, hope you enjoyed reading it. I am working to get some of his best(must listen) songs onto this blog. Check this space often for more on A.R Rahman.

A major twist to the quota issue and setback to the anti-reservation lobby?

The leaders of ruling UPA allies and Left parties will meet at the Prime Minister's residence to discuss the recent developments on the quota issue.

The crucial meeting will be attended by top leaders of UPA parties, the Left, beggars, eunuchs from various states sources said.

On Thursday, the Prime Minister spoke of the need for a broad-based national consensus to decide on the nature of reservation as there were eunuchs involved and they were not categorized in any of the sexes.

Earlier, Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh had said that the Government is planning to bring another 50% reservation for the eunuchs and 100% resevation for the beggars.

The Minister also held a series of meetings with legal experts including Bobby darling (big brother fame), Mr Pichumani (Secretary of the beggar association of india).

Though there was no official word on the discussions, sources said the government was "anxious" for a solution. "Consultations are on. The Government is looking at various matters and is anxious for a solution," a source was quoted.

Recently, the court had questioned the basis of the norms for fixing the OBC category. The court had also remarked that caste based reservations were dividing the nation. The great brains in the UPA govt mistook this judgement and thought that the court was upset as the eunuchs and beggars were nowhere mentioned.

A source quoted bobby darling saying that " Arjun singh used me for personal reasons and ditched me". Now whatever does that mean?

Hyderabadi Chotu !!

This is one of the classiest Hyderabadi joke you may ever come across. It's an old Hyderabadi nugget Enjoy this..it is really funny if u know Hyderabadi slang! A bit vulgar(only a bit mind u), but thats how it goes in our old city!!!!

In Hyderabad we have our own little Johnny. His name is Chotu. His father is ambitious to educate Chotu. Chotu goes to school located in Tappachaputra. Its principal is educated in Urdu high school and claims that he passed tenth class!

There is a school inspection the next day and the conversation is as follows :
Teacher: Kal inispector ayinga. Kochchanaa (questions) puchinga. Sab achchaa padkey aau. Koi galath answer deengaa naa tho main uske pairaan thodtoon.

Chotu: Iski maakki. Kyun aara inispector? Kaam nai hai usku? Kya kochchanaa puchta kathey?

Teacher: Abey tereku kaiku re, tu kal school aanaaich nai. Tu tera moo khola to gaaliaan nikaltay. Tereku main absent nai daalthaun. Ghar pe baithkey gotiyaan khel. Tu school aayingaa to inispector ke saamney mere izzat ki biryaani karke khaaingaa tu.

So our Chotu is excited, goes home and tells his father that he is not going to school the next day.

Father: Yeah kyaa hai..ischool hai paan dabba hai? Gaand pay maartoon saale tu ischool nai gaya to!

Chotu: Arey Bava, mera teacher bola nakko aao bolke.

Father: Usku akhal hai! Begum suno! Chotu ischool nai jayinga kathey kal. Agar ino ischool nai gaya to kaise padhinga? Chotu, agar tu kal ischool nahin gaya naa, terehaathan pairaan thod daaltaun.

So Chotu cries and finally agrees to go to school. Next day at inschool, the teacher is very upset to see Chotu back.

Teacher: Arey teri maakki. Nakko aao bole to bhi kyun aaya re?

Chotu: Mera bava gaand phodtaon bola ischool nai gaya to.

Teacher: Arrey! Tera bava bola? Tera bava ischool ko gaya re kabhi..Theek hai chal. Last bench pe baith aur inispector aya to chhup jaa Dikhnaich nai. Kuch bhi gadbad karinga naa meri noukri gaand lag jayingi.

So Chotu goes and sits on the last bench hiding behind a tall guy. Inspector comes for the visit.

Inspector: Adaab.

Teacher: Adaab saab. Bachen acha padrain saab. Kochchanaa puchey to answeraan yun bolte.

Inspector: Aisaaa? Ithney kilever(clever) hai aapke bachchey? Achchaa, ek bahuth easy sawaal - Hamarey body mein sab se nazook cheez kaun si hai?

Teacher: Arey Imtiyaz tu bata rey!

The great Andhra Bandh !!

It was 7 in the morning and i woke up to utter chaos in my house. Reason- my bro had a external practical exam today and every political party supported the bandh called by different OBC organizations. Though my dad explained him that the exam would be postponed he wouldnt listen. Made so many calls to his lecs and friends that my dad got mad at him. But then who would want to miss a external semester practical ? i pity my bro on this.

I woke up, brushed and washed my face. Then with a coffee in hand took a look at Deccan Chronicle (no i am not promoting any newspaper here ;) ) and saw the headlines. Congress, TDP, TRS and every little known political party supported a bandh just to beg for a % of reservation. "ROUGES and RASCALS" i thought for a moment. First of all i find this very idea of bandh 'FUNNY'. Is it just me, or everyone finds this funny?

I thought of going to a cd store nearby and grab a copy of sivaji and damn! the shops were closed too :( . Finally a dull day, spent time reading the Vinci code and then watching chapell resign. I seriously support bandhs if they are called between 8 in the night to 6 in the morning. Optimistic, am I ? :D

Dollar ($) Dream$

DOLLAR ($) DREAM$ - Does this term sound familiar ? It has to be if you are from the land of pearls. every second person you meet in a engineering college and u ask them about their plans for the future, you get "MS in US of A" as your answer.

By way of aside, is there some kind of strange affinity between Hyderabad and the US of A? I would say YES. 66% of all Indians who move to the States are from Andhra Pradesh (got it frm a site :D)-- a startling figure, and one that could be hotly contested by our Patels and Sardars, among others.

I must admit that i am one of those guyz whoz trying to get into tht list of 66% indians..and i am not all alone .. i got company... srik and rajesh :). There was never a day where we dint discuss about the life in US of A. We would discuss about the cars, movies , food joints, the life there and the main point of discussion would obviously be about the blondes and desi babes in the US ;). We rarely discussed about the universities though we got 3 admits each. :D

Sometimes in the night when i start thinking about the life a year from now, i get very nostalgic :(. I seriously think whether the pain is worth enough studying in US leaving your loved ones back home. When i speak about this to srik and rajesh they feel my thoughts sound too girlish :(. Does it really sound so ? well i think NO. After leading a "ROYAL" life here in India, can i even think of working somewhere in a petrol bunk or a bar or a restaurant or as a pizza delivery boy in the US? I have friends working like these in the US and it really pains me when i think i have to do all these when there is no other go at the University i study.

But then being an average student, there isnt much chance to study further in INDIA. Masters in India and that too from a decent university/college is really tough, and it gets even more tough when you are not one among the OBC's. This very thing made me think about pursing higher studies abroad and with the qualifications i got, i am very happy to say that i got admits from good universities.

Its all about balancing the options you got. Like how a saying goes in hindi " Kuch paana hai toh kuch khona padta hai". This is what is happening to most us here. In order to PAANA a MS frm US you have to KHONA the love and affection of your loved ones and to miss the place where you spent 20 years.Maybe it’s a purely emotional thought but as we go further away from our roots, there exists a certain loss of identity which is hard to regain as time passes.
